SWEET JULY

My cats are among the lucky ones, and so am I. We live in comfort with air conditioning and clean, fresh water. But of course, I’m always thinking about those less fortunate. Homeless animals struggle terribly in the sweltering heat, but there are ways we can make a lifesaving difference for the stray cats in our community.

At this time of year, community cats definitely need extra help from compassionate people. Animal League America has a fantastic tip sheet, Protecting Community Cats from the Summer Heat, that covers everything from hydration and shade to how to build a cat shelter.
I put fresh water out every day for the feral cats on my property (with lots of ice) as well as an old plastic garbage bin filled with fresh water for the deer, because wildlife could use some help, too. It’s so important to replenish the water frequently and keep it in the shade.
Not surprisingly, July is Hydration Awareness Month, which is so important for both people and pets. My fosters and resident cats have bowls of water everywhere in the house, always filled with ice cubes. I refresh the water twice a day. In addition, water fountains are huge favorites in our home. Many cats just love moving water. Has your cat ever sat by the sink watching the faucet run, maybe catching a drop on her paw and licking it off? It must be part of their evolution because they are such careful, picky creatures about cleanliness, and they seem to know that running water is probably fresher than still water. That’s why water fountains can make such a difference. On the other hand, some cats hate anything new and will find a water fountain too strange even to approach. So, as usual, your cat will decide!
Of course, dogs need summer care too, which can be a bit more complicated because they require outdoor exercise. Luckily, dog owners have many options, including cooling mats and beds to keep their pets comfortable (these also work for cats), as well as cooling harnesses and vests. Not to mention, specially designed water bottles for hydration breaks during walks. There are also various booties for their paws—some look like Crocs!—because asphalt temperatures can reach 125°F even when the air temperature is only 77°F, and a dog’s paws can burn in just 60 seconds! Place the back of your hand on the sidewalk; if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Also, take your walk during the cooler hours of the day and stay in the shade and on the grass whenever possible. If your dog is small enough, carry him/her to a shady spot in the grass. In excessive heat, keep all your pets indoors and provide a cool spot where they can rest and relax.
Because July 31 is National Mutt Day, I’d like to celebrate the special perks that come with adopting a mixed-breed pet, whether canine or feline. First, every “mutt” is a one-of-a-kind, often inheriting the best traits of his or her ancestors. Also, thanks to their mixed genetic makeup, mutts tend to be healthier than their pedigreed cousins, live longer, and require fewer trips to the vet. When you adopt a mutt, you’re helping an animal shelter save yet another life, and you’re not supporting commercial breeders or puppy/kitten mills.
You can honor National Mutt Day by volunteering at your local shelter, donating goods or funds to a rescue group, or adopting a mutt of your own! Here are two dogs and two cats waiting with my colleagues at NSALA, ready to join you for a summer…and a lifetime…of love.
Originally from Texas, Bentley (Adopt TX2145) is a playful and fluffy young husky mix with energy to spare and a heart full of love! As an older puppy, he’s still learning and would thrive with an experienced adopter who can provide patience, guidance, and strong leadership as he grows into the best dog he can be. Bentley would make a wonderful companion for an active household, and while he may enjoy a canine sibling, a meet-and-greet is essential to ensure a good fit. Bentley is eager to find his forever home where he can outgrow some of his puppy behaviors. See Bentley’s adoption profile and video now.

Handsome 9-year-old Bernie (Adopt T76287) is asking for another chance. He thought he’d found his forever home—until tragedy struck, and he lost his beloved owner. Now back in our care, this lovable Terrier mix is struggling with shelter life and needs a loving home to call his own. Housebroken and great on a leash, this lovable, high-energy guy is seeking an experienced adopter who can keep up with his zest for life. Bernie would love to find a home in a quiet suburban neighborhood, where he can enjoy peaceful walks and outdoor play in a big backyard. Bernie gets along with other dogs and would love to meet any potential canine siblings to ensure a good fit. If you have experience with big dogs and are looking for a loyal and lively companion, Bernie might be the perfect addition to your family. See Bernie’s adoption profile and video now.

Amari (Adopt CO0079) is a small adult kitty whose rescuer brought her to Bianca’s Furry Friends for a “lifestyle reset.” Always dressed to impress in her stunning tuxedo, Amari is the purrfect fit for experienced adopters with older kids looking for a determined lady to rule their home. She loves being the center of attention during playtime and is always insistent about being first in line at treat parties. Over time, she’s revealed her appreciation for calm feline and canine friends as long as they understand that this diva is always in charge! See Amari’s adoption profile and video now.

I’m so honored to be part of an organization that saves lives around the block and around the world— lives just like these — from Afghanistan to Texas to Long Island. When hundreds of people gathered in Manhattan last month for Animal League America’s Celebration of Rescue, you could feel the compassion in the air. Not only was it an inspiring evening, it was so much fun, thanks to the talents of former adopter Hank Azaria whose EZ Street Band covers of Bruce Springsteen provided the incredible entertainment.
With gratitude to everyone who made this magical night possible.
