Dexter’s journey began nearly a decade ago when he was just a playful puppy, adopted from North Shore Animal League America into what was supposed to be his forever home. But when his family went through a divorce, Dexter was cast aside — left at a shelter in New Jersey, alone and confused. Now safe at our Port Washington, NY Adoption Center, the transition has not been easy as Dexter longs to be in a home again.
February is “Responsible Pet Owners Month,” but I’m not having it! The word “owners” is wrong. Ownership involves property, and we don’t own pets any more than we own people! We care for them, love them, and respect them, but we do not own them. So, I hereby declare February as “Responsible Pet Parents Month” because, as adoptive parents, pet parents are responsible for the well-being and happiness of the beings they love — no matter what!
Are you looking for a way to help pets in need? Do you have an old car, truck, boat, motorcycle, or even a plane that you’re thinking of getting rid of? Donating your car or other vehicle to an animal charity is the easiest way to satisfy both of these issues! Our vehicle donation program is fast, easy and hassle-free—and it earns you tax credits—while offering another great way to help support our no-kill mission.

A quiet bond tethered senior cats Mohawk, Oneonta and Delaware. The trio had seen it all — from cramped, chaotic beginnings in a hoarding situation to years of quiet hope at North Shore Animal League America. Until finally the unimaginable happened: all three were adopted together!
Cats make wonderful pets. They can be less demanding and can easily adjust to a variety of lifestyles and living spaces. Every cat is a true individual, so it’s important to take the time to choose the friend who’s right for you. A cat’s personality and age, as well as the kinds of pets you already have at home, are all things to keep in mind when making your selection.
