Can I Take Legal Action if a Vet Euthanized My Dog Without My Permission?

I brought my sick dog to the vet on Saturday. Different treatment options were discussed, including hospitalization, IV therapy, and testing. I made it clear that I wanted my dog to be saved and told the vet to do whatever it took. The vet explained that treatment could cost thousands of dollars, but I agreed to move forward. We also briefly discussed euthanasia, but I did not want my dog euthanized. There were financial options available, including insurance that I had recently obtained, although I later had to cancel it because of this unexpected situation. We agreed that the vet would perform tests and eventually hospitalize my dog. However, when I was later called into the room, I discovered that they had euthanized my dog without my approval...

Can I Get My Dog Back After Someone Surrendered Her to a Rescue Without My Permission?

I need assistance getting my dog back from a rescue organization that placed her into foster care. My dog was originally a stray that I took in and cared for. While I was unexpectedly delayed and stuck out of town trying to return to retrieve my dog and my belongings, someone took my dog without my permission and surrendered her to an animal shelter. He had many opportunities and ways to contact me and let me know what he planned to do, but he never informed me. When I finally demanded that he tell me where he had taken my dog, he refused for several weeks and even months before finally admitting where she had been surrendered...

Can I Get My Dog Back After a Verbal Agreement Went Wrong?

I am involved in a dispute over a verbal agreement concerning a dog that I gave to someone and now want back. He is now saying that he would rather surrender her to a shelter than return her to me. Can I file a police report to request a welfare check on the dog, or can I legally show up at his residence to try to get her back?

Can an Animal Shelter Refuse to Return My Cats After I Was Arrested?

My cats were in my car with me while I was out driving, and I ended up getting arrested. My cats were taken to the animal shelter, and animal control told me that I could pay the required fees and get them back. When I went to retrieve them, the woman at the shelter gave me the amount I needed to pay. After I walked back to my car, she called the police and falsely claimed that I had yelled at her. I never raised my voice. As a result, I was arrested again because of fines in another county, so I was still unable to get my cats back. I want and need my cats back. There have never been any issues regarding how I care for them. They are healthy, well cared for, and very loved. The shelter employee also claimed that my cats had fleas, but I know they did not. I feel like the shelter is lying, but no one has explained anything to me. What can I do to get my cats back?

Who Has Legal Rights to a Dog After a Rescue “Locks” a Microchip Following a New Adoption?

I am with Hotel for Dogs and Cats, a 501(c)(3) rescue organization in Pensacola, Florida. We have been operating for 17 years. My question concerns a microchip dispute. Another rescue organization microchipped a dog seven years ago, kept the chip registered to their rescue, and then adopted the dog out. After seven years, the owner surrendered the dog to us in poor health. We were aware that the dog had a microchip and contacted AKC Reunite three times. The dog’s new adopter also contacted them. On the third call, we were told that the chip had been “locked.” AKC Reunite then contacted the original rescue, which claimed that, even after seven years, the dog should have been returned to them. Meanwhile, we had the dog re-microchipped, and our veterinarian advised the new owner to register both chips. We never imagined that another rescue organization would respond this way...

Can We Sue a Dog Groomer for Negligence and Emotional Distress After Our Dog Was Injured During Grooming?

My wife and I took our dog to a groomer in Loveland, Colorado, where my daughter lives, as we reside in Nebraska. During the grooming session, my wife received a phone call stating that there had been an incident, but the groomer would not provide details until she arrived. When my wife arrived, our dog was still on the grooming table being groomed, and there was a significant amount of blood coming from his mouth. The owner explained that he had accidentally been cut on the tongue but was unsure whether we wanted to take him to a vet. The owner stated that they would cover the veterinary bills and that there would be no charge for the grooming. The groomer appeared very remorseful and was in tears over what had happened. Due to the amount of blood, my wife immediately picked up our dog and rushed him to a veterinary hospital. The vet took him in right away and performed surgery, placing 14 stitches in his tongue. We were told that the cut was serious and that it was fortunate we brought him in when we did, as he could have bled to death. Although the groomer paid the veterinary bills, our dog is now very traumatized. We are having difficulty getting him groomed again because he is scared. We had to hand-feed him for three days after the surgery, and he now runs away whenever he sees a grooming table. My question is, even though the groomer paid the vet bills, I believe there was negligence in not recognizing the seriousness of the injury and reporting it immediately. We also believe there should be compensation for pain and suffering.

Can We Request Reimbursement for Cat Expenses Before Returning the Cat to Its Owner?

My wife is in the military, and one of her coworkers went on international orders. She left her cat with us, and we believed she was giving the cat to us permanently. She also said that she would send money or set up a monthly subscription for food and litter, but she never did. Now she is back in the United States and is asking for the cat back. She is also threatening to sue us for the cat. We never said that we would refuse to return the cat; we are only asking her to reimburse us for the expenses we paid while caring for the cat. She even contacted her military command and told them her side of the story. We would appreciate some guidance on what to do.

Can the Owner Take Back the Dog We Planned to Adopt After We Temporarily Took in Both Dogs?

We applied to adopt a dog through Adopt a Pet and met the owner. We learned that he was living in his car with two pit bull-type dogs and was unable to find housing after being evicted. We offered to keep both dogs for a couple of weeks so he could find a place to live. He has now found housing and is claiming that he is going to take both dogs back because he does not want to separate them.

Can I Take Legal Action if a Temporary Foster Refuses to Return My Dog and Claims He Died?

My mother and I were moving, and she moved into a smaller place. She thought her Boston Terrier, Meho, would be happier with more room to run and play, so we temporarily rehomed him with a man who lives in the same town. We immediately realized we had made a mistake and asked the man to bring him back the following morning. We have text messages supporting our side, as well as vet records, pictures, and paperwork proving that the dog belonged to us originally. The man told us to stop contacting him. However, after I told him I was going to take him to court to get our dog back, he suddenly responded and claimed that my dog was hit by a car and died. He will not tell us where it happened, when it happened, or provide any vet records or proof. Please help us. I do not know what else to do.
