Saved Dog from Abusive Owner, Now He Wants Her & Her Puppies

////Saved Dog from Abusive Owner, Now He Wants Her & Her Puppies

Question

I saved a dog from an abusive owner, he gave us the dog. We didn't register because we were not sure she could stay. She didn't get along with my animals. He found out she had puppies with our boxer (total accident we tried so hard) and saw money signs. He called animal control saying we were holding the dog and he wanted the pups and mom back. They took her and the pups. He filed to sue us, but a month later dropped the case and signed his rights so no one would get them. Now animal control isn't cooperating with us. I need help, what should i do?

Answer

Ownership records cannot be changed without the consent of the adopter of record. However, if a pet custody case is litigated, it is very likely that a court would consider more than just who adopted an animal. Courts would likely consider what transpired after adoption, including, for example, whether the animal was given away, sold, or abandoned, who has been the animal’s primary caretaker and paid for the animal’s care (such as food, veterinary expenses, grooming, etc.).
