Can I get my dog back?

////Can I get my dog back?

Question

I rehomed my puppy about a week and a half ago but have had a change of mind. Is it possible for me to get him back? He is chipped under my name.

Answer

People who rehome their animal generally have no further rights to that animal and the person with whom the animal was rehomed generally has no legal obligation to return the animal. Regrets do not equal rights. The decision to rehome an animal should be carefully considered before doing so. While a microchip can be persuasive evidence of ownership, it does not necessarily prove ownership. If a lawsuit is commenced for the return of an animal, the court will likely consider other things, including, for example, that the person under whose name an animal is microchipped sold or gave away the animal. I hope that everyone involved does what is best for this puppy who should have a loving, stable, and forever home.
