Surrendered rights.

////Surrendered rights.

Question

I just surrendered my dog yesterday, but I did not sign any paperwork. I want my dog back. Do I have any rights to get it back with me?

Answer

People who surrender their animal generally have no further rights to that animal unless there is an agreement that states otherwise. Even when no documents are signed, it is important to understand that one’s actions also have consequences and can provide evidence of an intent to surrender an animal. People who believe an animal is being wrongfully withheld can sue to try to get the animal returned. Time is of the essence. After an animal is re-homed, these cases get more complicated and more difficult for a person who surrendered an animal to win.
