Question
My dog got out and shortly after was picked up by the pound. While I understand the impound fee, they are also charging me for $40 worth of vaccines which they administered upon her arrival and without my consent. I have proof that my dog has all needed vaccines and is up to date. All licenses, fees, etc., are up to date as well. Can I refuse to pay for the vaccines?
California, USA
Answer
Consider that shelters vaccinate animals to lessen the transmission of diseases in the shelter. It is generally better for impounded animals to be immediately retrieved. People who believe they are being overcharged to retrieve their animals from a shelter can sue later or follow the county’s appeals process.
