////Volunteer Appreciation Month: Morgan Brown

Morgan Brown, Volunteer Since 2022

Forging an Unbreakable Bond

When Morgan started volunteering at Animal League America, he didn’t know the gifts he would receive in return included a new best friend.

Volunteer Morgan Brown

As a lifelong area resident, Morgan was familiar with North Shore Animal League America. When his work schedule changed in 2022, a friend suggested Morgan volunteer to help with our dogs in his newfound free time. Right away, Morgan had an affinity for the adult dogs. “The older guys really make the best companions, they already know what to do,” he said. “People walk in locked in on getting a puppy and I can’t help myself; I will ask them are you sure you want to take care of an infant in your house?”

Sadly, seniors and dogs with special needs are often overlooked, but as a no-kill shelter, they can stay with us as long as they need to for someone to come along who can see all they have to offer. And for Morgan, there was just something about a certain black Lab/Pit mix named Oliver. A nearly 100 lb. dog with epilepsy, Oliver kept getting passed over, even though as a Sponsor Pet his medical care is covered for his lifetime. “I knew it would be tougher for Oliver to get adopted,” Morgan noted. “People gave him a quick glance and walked right by. It took Oliver awhile to open up, but once we got a little bond going, we became really close. I started going in on my off days to take him to the beach or park. Finally, I realized I just needed to make this a forever thing.”

Their first official night together, Oliver had a hard time believing he was really home! According to Morgan, “Oliver literally checked on me 20 times. He would get up in my face, sniff me, lick me, and be like, all right, you’re still here. Then he’d go back to bed.”

Their bond continues to deepen and fortunately Morgan still dedicates his time volunteering with our dogs who are waiting for their best friend to come along. Compassionate volunteers like Morgan are an integral part of North Shore Animal League America’s no-kill mission, where there’s always hope for a second chance.

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month

At North Shore Animal League America, we could not perform all of the hands-on work that we do without the help of our incredible team of dedicated volunteers.
