For Rocky, finding a new home began with a promise. The five-year-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix had already been through heartbreaking change. After losing the person he loved most, Rocky found himself starting over at Animal League America. Despite being affectionate, playful, and a favorite among our volunteers — the right family still hadn’t found him, and years were passing by.
Our social media team made Rocky a promise: we’re going to post you every single day until you go home. And our entire community joined in. For nine straight days, Rocky filled our social feeds. Some posts were heartfelt. Others were funny. And every post carried the same message: Rocky was still waiting, and somewhere out there was someone who needed to see him. People rooted for him from near and far.
More than 200 miles away in Massachusetts, a couple looking for their perfect dog were watching, too. Rocky’s daily appearances made them smile, and then they got curious. Finally, they made the decision to get in the car and drive to our Port Washington Adoption Center to meet the dog so many people had been cheering on.
On day nine, the post everyone had been hoping for finally came. Rocky was going home! For Rocky, it took nine days, countless shares, and a community determined to go the distance for him. Sometimes, helping an animal find home begins with something as simple as refusing to stop telling their story. The animals in our care may be waiting here in Port Washington, but the people ready to open their hearts to them can be anywhere.
