The journey to North Shore Animal League America that each of our rescued animals' travels is different, but we strive to ensure it ends the same — with a loving home. That commitment was especially important for two remarkable cats, Potamus and Eduardo, who traveled all the way from Kabul, Afghanistan to our Port Washington, NY campus, and spent over 200 days with us before finding the families who would change their lives forever.
In June 2024, North Shore Animal League America’s rescue team welcomed 26 extraordinary feline survivors from Kabul, Afghanistan. Rescued in collaboration with Kabul Small Animal Rescue (KSAR), these cats came from a country where pet adoption is rare, and resources for animal welfare are scarce.
In Ossining, NY, a rescue dog named Peaches has become much more than a classroom pet. Seamus’s story began in heartbreak. Found abandoned in a Manhattan apartment with no access to food or water, the young black Lab mix was on the brink of death. Severely malnourished and too weak to stand, his condition shocked even our most seasoned veterinarians. But with time and specialized care, Seamus he slowly began to heal. Today, this amazing dog has truly had his life changed for good.
For high school senior Grace, volunteering at North Shore Animal League America started as a school requirement, but quickly became something much more. “I always knew I wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter,” Grace told us. “When I had to complete service hours for class, I saw it as my chance. I had adopted a cat from Animal League America before and loved the organization. Once I started volunteering, I knew I wasn’t going to stop.”
