Once Padme was finished with her job of being a mama to her eight puppies, which were rescued with her from Mississippi, she was ready to find a loving home through our Adoption Center. But little did she realize that her potential adopters was already part of the North Shore Animal League America family.

When the adopters came in to meet bonded cats Tommy and Ollie, their friend Fredo decided he would be front and center at the meeting too, and plopped himself on top of his buddies. What happened next was three furry friends went home with two kind and big-hearted people.
“Since I work for a nonprofit myself, I realize how important it is to support an organization with a real cause that I believe in,” said Larry Grubler, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Transitional Services for New York. “The two causes I truly believe in are helping people with mental health issues and helping animals. I’ve been involved with North Shore Animal League America for many years. I’ve seen the amazing work you do and I have personal experience with the staff.”
Happiness for Star, a Terrier mix, is the company of people and playing ball. Whenever she has both, her tail wags nonstop and she has a “happy” smile. Star, hardly more than a baby herself, arrived on a rescue transport from Mississippi, with 11 four-week-old puppies. This sweet family was found abandoned in a field in Alabama and Star had single-handedly managed to care for all 11 babies. It was amazing that they all survived. Now that Star’s puppies have been adopted, it’s time for her to shine and find a loving home of her own.
At just 12-weeks-old, Nubia was surrendered to the overcrowded Animal Care Centers (ACC) in New York City. It was clear she could not bear weight on her right leg. The staff at ACC immediately put out a plea for another shelter to take her in, with the hope they could somehow help this beautiful girl.
When asked ‘what is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about homeless dogs and cats?’ Nancy stated, “to help them of course.” And that is what Nancy has spent a lifetime doing.
“I believe that I’ve talked about the organization at least once a week—for the past 40 years.” When Virginia Desocio adopted her dog, Pumpkin, there was one building on the campus. She returned for a visit three years ago. “I was so impressed with the whole organization. The Mutt-i-grees Curriculum had just been completed. I wished it had been around when I was still teaching special education in New Jersey.”
This summer, a group of high school students from Nassau BOCES and their instructor, Paul Eidle, came up with a great way to benefit both the dogs and the dog walkers on North Shore Animal League America’s Port Washington, N.Y. campus. As a project for their class, they built three large, sturdy wooden benches that could be put in two of the dog parks.
An urgent call came in about a young kitten found in a backyard in the Adirondacks that couldn’t walk at all. The staff at the Adirondack Cat Rescue and Adoption Center, part of our North Country Initiative in Glens Falls, N.Y. went immediately to pick her up.
